Self sustinence projects have been identified as key areas of development amongst rural communities as the country moves towards food security and achieving Sustainable Development Goal Number two, which promotes sustainable agriculture, to end poverty and improve nutrition. This was part of the theme during a tour of the flourishing Makhubu Presidential Nutrition Garden.

Hon. Dr. Evelyn Ndlovu, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Matabeleland South, was the guest of honour at the Presidential Garden tour in Makhubu Village, Mangwe District held on Friday, January 31, 2025. She was accompanied by ZANU PF Provincial Chairlady of the Women’s League, Cde. Sindi Nleya, Mangwe DCC Chairman, Cde. Bakani Nleya, Acting District Development Coordinator, Madam Ruth Sawuramba, the CEO of Mangwe RDC Mr Bongani Ngwenya, Agritex DAEO Mr. Ncube M and representatives from various government departments. event also attracted farmers from Nkedile Presidential Garden and other communities, all eager to witness the progress of the initiative.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ndlovu reiterated President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision of creating a prosperous and self-sufficient Zimbabwe through initiatives that empower rural communities. She emphasized that the Presidential Village Business Unit (VBU) was instrumental in promoting economic growth, health and wellness, job creation, and food security. The government is working towards establishing these VBUs in all villages across the country, incorporating nutrition gardens, livestock feeding and drinking troughs, veterinary corners, livestock auction sales points, and washing basins for women.

The tour showcased a thriving maize crop at maturity stage and butternuts already on sale, demonstrating the impact of the project on local food production. Farmers in Makhubu Village expressed excitement over future expansion plans, including the establishment of a fish pond, which will further enhance agricultural productivity and food security in line with Vision 2030. The initiative aligns with the government’s goal of transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy, ensuring that every household has access to adequate food and nutrition.

Giving closing remarks at the ceremony , Chief Sangulube expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa for championing rural economic development and supporting initiatives that uplift communities. The success of the Makhubu Presidential Garden reflects the potential of agricultural projects to drive meaningful change in rural areas.
