Mawhi etjaba, pfumbila kwetjaba!

Community Voices for Community Development.

Godwin Gumbo,

Plumtree, Mat South – In a bold and inspiring move, youth artists from Plumtree have come together to fight against the growing menace of drug abuse in their community. Recognizing the devastating effects that drugs have on the lives of young people, they have launched an awareness campaign that is both powerful and unique—a 100km walk from Bulawayo to Plumtree. This initiative is not just about the physical feat; it’s about raising awareness, igniting conversations, and rallying the community to take a stand against drug abuse.

Babongile Sibanda, a celebrated artist in Plumtree and a dedicated youth leader, is leading the charge by committing to walk the full 100km under the blazing Zimbabwean sun. This is the second time he has done it after he again embarked on the same journey for the same cause in 2023.

His journey symbolizes the struggle many face in overcoming drug addiction and the long, challenging road to recovery. Alongside him, DJ Yugoe will perform a 12-hour non-stop DJ set to further amplify the cause, showing his endurance as a metaphor for resilience in the fight against drugs. Adding to this, the popular group The Vintage Nation will hold a local march in Plumtree, bringing the message directly to the community.

These artists have already taken to the airwaves, speaking passionately on Radio Bukalanga and SKYZMETRO. Their goal is to not only inform but also to mobilize listeners and communities along the route to support and participate in the campaign. By using radio, they’ve reached homes, schools, and informal traders, creating a widespread awareness that drug abuse is a threat to the future of youth in Plumtree and beyond.

This campaign is not just for the artists—it’s for the entire community. Drug abuse affects everyone, and together, the people of Plumtree can fight this scourge. The artists are urging the community to join them in this movement, whether by walking alongside them, attending the events, or simply showing support through social media and local networks.

Let’s stand with these young heroes, celebrate their efforts, and commit to being part of the solution. By working together, we can protect our youth, raise awareness, and create a drug-free future for Plumtree. Support the walk, join the marches, and let’s make our voices heard in the fight against drug abuse!
